We have spent a lot of time and used a lot of gear on the water.
Here is a fine tuned list of the gear we utilize on our MBG charter boats along with some of our incredible podcast interviewees. We have also done our due diligence to find some of the best pricing out there for you.
Thank you for using our gear guide!
Seaguar 130lb Blue Label Fluorocarbon is about as light as we go for live bait fishing giant bluefin tuna. Great for sunny calm days when you are trying to trick a fish into biting!
Diameter 1.17mm
Seaguar 150lb Blue Label Fluorocarbon is a great all around size leader size for live bait fishing giant bluefin tuna. This stuff is extremely tough and probably the most common size used by giant bluefin fishermen.
Diameter 1.28mm
Seaguar 180lb Blue Label Fluorocarbon is the perfect size leader material to land your giant tuna slob. 180lb is thin enough to get bites but thick enough to have a low percentage of chaffing a fish off. Great for rough weather days!
Diameter 1.38mm
Seaguar 220lb Blue Label Fluorocarbon is what we use for kite fishing leader material for giant bluefin. 220lb is strong enough that the percentage of chaff off is under 5% so it will hold up to several hours with a gut hooked fish which happens quite often on the kite. 220lb is also thin enough so if your kite bait goes underwater a little, the fish shouldn't notice it.
Diameter 1.66mm
Seaguar 150lb Premiere Green Label has all of the strength of 150lb fluorocarbon but has the diameter of 130lb fluorocarbon. Premiere/green label fluorocarbon is not quite as abrasive resistant than blue label in our opinion, but it has its place for a strong leader with sneaky presentation.
Diameter 1.17mm
Seaguar 170lb Blue Label Fluorocarbon is a leader that we have used a lot over the years during the commercial season and rough/cloudy days. This leader size is perfect for reducing chaff offs but keeping the same diameter presentation as 150lb blue label.
Diameter 1.28mm
Size 2 - 230lb Spro Power Swivel is our goto wind-on swivel for live bait fishing for giant bluefin. It has a very sneaky low profile presentation, its strong, and also flexible. The flexibility allows the swivel to come in and out of your guides easier. We recommend using this swivel with chaff tubing.
(500 pack) We use Jinkai LI Aluminum Crimps have a 1.17mm line diameter so we use them with 130lb and 150lb seaguar blue label fluorocarbon, 150lb and 170lb seaguar premiere green label, and 150lb jinkai regular mono top shot. Jinkai Aluminum crimps have been tested along side all other crimps and we have concluded they are the strongest crimps on the market.
(500 pack) We use Jinkai SG Aluminum Crimps have a 1.47mm line diameter so we use them with 180lb and 200lb seaguar blue label fluorocarbon, and 175-200lb jinkai regular mono top shot. Jinkai Aluminum crimps have been tested along side all other crimps and we have concluded they are the strongest crimps on the market.
(500 pack) We use Jinkai SF Aluminum Crimps have a 1.56 mm line diameter so we use them with 220lb seaguar blue label fluorocarbon for our kite leaders. Jinkai Aluminum crimps have been tested along side all other crimps and we have concluded they are the strongest crimps on the market.
Size #64 Black UV Stable Rubber Bands are a must have for attaching your lead to your main line. These are the best black rubber bands we have found in a bulk amount that will last most of the season. This band breaks at around 10-12lbs.
Size #32 Black UV Stable Rubber Bands are a must have for attaching your balloons as well as shock cords, down rods, etc. This band breaks at around 7lbs. Sold in a 1lb bulk amount.
Boston Big Game Fishing Club Kites are the most common used kite in the northeast. They are relatively in expensive, easy to fly, and require no adjustments. They are not recommended for winds higher that 20knots.
Blacks Kite Clips are a well made clip with an easy tension adjustment. They are strong enough to hold up baitfish as large as a 10lb bluefish.
SFE Kites are a standard in kite fishing. We use the all purpose green or red kite. It sticks and stays steady in the wind if adjusted properly. You can also get fancy and add a helium balloon on the back to put it up in very light wind days.
Kite Rings are a must have when kite fishing for bluefin tuna. These are put on above your leader and marker and clipped on to the kite clip. This allows the line to pass smoothly from your rod through the ring and down to your bait for easy bait adjustment and no hang up.
Berkley ProSpec Braid 80lb 1500 yard metered colored spool is a good option when spooling up your kite reel. Realistically you only need about 300 yards of this braid on your reel that is holding the kite. A size 50w reel or larger is recommended to handle the tension of the kite in high winds.
The Daiwa Tanacom 1000 Electric Reel is the most economic long lasting kite reel that you can currently buy. It is tough enough to handle the elements and strong enough to handle the kites tension day in and day out. These reels are very light weight and easy to use. You can wire them utilizing hubble plugs or alligator clamp them directly to a battery.
This Daiwa Tanacom Kite Rod is an inexpensive kite rod that is shortened to accommodate kite fishing. It has a plastic slick butt. This is a great rod if you are just getting into kite fishing or if you don't kite fish every single day. This rod can be used with almost any kite reel.
Jinkai SC-3C Blue Handle Crimpers are our goto crimpers for all lines from 130lb-220lb test.
Manley Stainless Mono Cutters are used all day every day aboard our charter boats. These cutters are self sharpening and work great for cutting braid, mono, copper wire, rigging floss, snipping fins, and much more.
We use 30lb Wax Rigging Floss for stitching dead baits, bridling baits, rigging helium balloons, and much more.
These R&R Tackle Rigging Needles get the job done without rusting like most other rigging needles on the market. They are made from a high density plastic that lasts. They are also easy to sharpen with a little sandpaper.
We use these Clear Rigging Elastics for bridling squid and several other bait fish. They are roughly 1inch diameter and stretch almost 3inches.
These Wooden Skewers are 12inches long and are made of beefier material so they keep your dead stick baits stiff. These are not your average BBQ skewer, these are slightly thicker.
The Frabill 50 gallon 12v Aerator is our goto aerator pump when keeping herring alive in our livewell. This comes with two air tubes, air check valves, and an easy mounting system. We wire it to a 15 amp breaker by snipping off the alligator clamps and wiring direct. We mount it under deck and run additional air hose up into our live well. That way it lasts even longer and doesn't get drenched with salt water all the time even though it is corrosion resistant.
You can find the long extra air hose HERE!
Here we have 25ft of the extra Airline Tubing to increase the distant from your aerator to your livewell.
T-9 Rust & Corrosion Spray is what we use to protect all of our pumps, aerators, valves, outboard engines, and any other pieces of equipment that could corrode even if they are advertised as corrosion resistant. A MUST HAVE!
225lb Coastlock Snap Swivel Size 2/0 Black 25 pack is what we use for haddock/bottom fishing. These are big enough so the snap swivel cannot get reeled into the tip of the rod by our charter customers. They are also strong enough in case you hook a porbeagle shark or other large bottom creature by accident.
Mustad EZ-Baiter Bottom Fishing Hooks Size 10/0 - 100 pack are what we use for haddock fishing and other bottom fish. They are shaped slightly similar to a circle hook, the have a longer shank for easy hook removal, and they are very strong so they will last. They can also be easily reshaped since they are duration and not stainless. Great price too!
Berkley Trilene Big Game 60lb Mono Leader- 235 yard spool- is what we use for our haddock and other bottom fishing rigs. It is thick enough to last but also thin enough to get bites and fit through the eye of the hook using a dropper loop connection.
